artwork entitled equality for quality
equality for quality This is the first head I made. I was stuck at home after a bad horse-riding accident when the inquiry following the murder of Stephen Lawrence published its findings. Stephen, an 18-year-old student waiting at a bus stop in Eltham, south-east London, was stabbed to death on 22.4.1993.
The inquiry concluded that the Metropolitan police was "institutionally racist" which led to the release, without charge, of the five whites suspected of his murder. Stephen was murdered because he was black. This murder, on the basis of race at the end of the 20th century, and a racist police force which allow it to go unpunished were a shock and it made me do this first head.
I do not believe we can have a quality of life as long as we discriminate on racial, social, religious or any other basis.
